Restoring my new-to-me 1997 9000 CSE includes troubleshooting the rear speakers, which sounded like they were producing distortion. This car has the premium sound system (10 speaker HK system with 6cd changer...). Knowing just a bit about speakers, I decided to remove the speaker to inspect it. As many of you know, this involves completely dismantling the speaker enclosure (instructions posted elsewhere, although if anyone is interested I will write it up). This turned out to be my first mistake, although I was able to verify that the two smaller of the three speakers worked, the large one was dead (as in no sound...however when I switched the speaker wires, I determined that the speaker itself was fine). I was able to quickly verify that this was the case on the other side as well.
So...my next inclination was to check the power amplifier, which is located underneath the passenger seat. Of course, this involves either removing the seat or moving it out of the way to access the amp...which was of course fine when I checked it (most of the wires under there are for the seat, there is only one massive connector to the amp which was fine upon inspection and manual manipulation).
Which leads me to the resolution of the problem...which was to pull the radio out (using coat hanger to press release buttons as previously posted on the site). To my surprise and delight, after re-seating the connectors on the back of the radio, everything works fine!
This proves that your (allright, MY) first inclination may not be the best way to attack a problem (eg removing the speaker to test it), nor may your second inclination be correct either! In retrospect, I should have definitely started with the EASIEST procedure (popping the radio out) FIRST!
The good news is that while I am out the time I spent on the unnecessary procedures, I am now intimately familiar with these components...The other good news is that the premium sound system is indeed premium! My favorite road tune is called "Slave to the traffic light" at near max volume as I speed down the highway (away from any traffic lights)! :)
Thanks to all who posted previously (it gives me incentive to post my experiences), and thanks to The Saab Network.
