what's the mileage and what can you expect to fail in the next year or two, what would you spend on a lease, what is the enjoyment of a new car worth to you?
it's always a tough choice, and in most cases i think it just comes down to enjoyment of a new car, because we could keep fixing these cars forever almost, and financially it seems to always pay to keep the ol car and fix it, if you can DIY, if not, the mechs will eat up thousands and you'll still be left with a $1000 car.
funny thing about old cars, if i go to mexico or someplace and rent some beat up volkswagon bug with a hole in the roof it's a blast to drive around for a week and i want to take it home, but when i'm here, driving around in my 92 9000S and the stitching is gone in the leather, and it looks out of date compared to all the new saabs, and not so classic compared to the old 900s, and just plain SQUARE compared to all the new cars around, it's easy to start thinking it's time to sell, but really, all the money i save, it pays to learn humility and the value of priorities...
if you budget $100 a month for repairs for the next couple years, can you expect to have money left over?
what else could you do with the lease money that you wouldn't do otherwise?
you can always sell it for $1000 (shouldn't depreciate less than that if it's nice and running)...
cheap to insure without collision
cheap to drive
cheap to fix, and if it's something major, you can sell off some parts and junk it and walk away with $500
for the exhaust, to do it yourself shouldn't be that bad, four to six bolts, check ebay and the saab classifieds for used exhaust parts, or just try doing away with the cat and center muffler...
i recall some posts on getting rid of the catalytic convertor, and one just the other day about the middle exhaust. that'll save some bux, unless you need the cat for emissions.
good luck
