unless things have changed more recently, everyone i've known with mercedes has problems with them, one guy has a mid 80's 380SL roadster and has spent $24K in the last few years on a nice one he bought a few years ago for $10K. Another friend with same car also has put a lot of money into it recently, engine seals went. I have a friend in MA who grew up with Mercedes and the only way he says it was affordable for his dad to do it was to keep parts cars around and do the work himself.
As to toyotas, etc., i've had problems with nissan, my subaru ran great when i sold it at 169K, but had a lot of little sensors and electrical things along the way, not to mention $1100 worth of seals dumping oil too much to drive at about 150K. trouble with japanese cars is most of them feel like crap by the time they're ten years old (except maybe for highly priced models), whereas you can get in a saab or mercedes and still feel like it's a nice car.
but i agree, why not fix design flaws?? one nice thing about it is that it makes it easy to find parts because so many are the same from year to year, thank god!
