Joe,
You make very valid points. And, I will take this momment to vent a little myself.
The mistake Saab made with the 9000 is it went after the BMW, etc. market. They started development on all those electrical goodies to show how advanced they were. I truely believe they wanted to make everything auto/ electical that they could.
In example...My '97 Aero (bless it' sole) had the shift indicator light. WOW!! I don't know what I would have done without that. And the everything computer....hell, that's important. The auto climate control is ok.....but really....the control system in the 900's I had were a lot simpler and functional. How hard is it to dial the temperature up or down with the twist of the dial....and direct the warm and cold air or both to the desired areas.
The ultimate 9000 for me, and I suspect for others, might be the;
1. '98 CSE w/Aero engine and body panels. Oh..and , of course all og the intake and exhaust upgrades mentioned on this board. But stock ECU. I like the idea of getting 32MPH HWY.
2. CSE seats, well bolstered, cloth covered. I like the look of the Aero seats but prefer the CSE's for all around driving.
3. Better sway bars.
4. Better sound proofing.
5. Save the electronics for the engine management systems and give me manual controls for the climate.
6. No sun roof.
7. Ditch the computer. I drove from Boston to Ca. with 3 looks at the map. If I want to know my MPG....I will calculate the old fashioned way. I don't need to know how far or the ETA.
8. Ditch the wood dash. I am driving!! not sitting around in my living room.
If you are screwing around trying to read the little LCD's you are not driving...you are getting ready to crash.
Saab lost its focus a long time ago. If they would have built the car I describe above....with the natural upgrades though improved processes, materials and components...just imagine how good that car would be today.
A true, no baloney, high performance, long distance, reliable, durable, drivers car that gets good MPG. It would haul ass and carry a lot of stuff and be bullet proof. You could show up at the ballet, ski slopes, dirt track racing or the swap meet and not give a damn what anyone thinks...because you know what's important in a car.
I don't know if anyone remembers the comparison test between the BMW 540i and the Aero. Minus the fussy electronics and stupid stuff, the Saab was preferred over the BMW as the car the testers would want on a long trip. They also thought the Saab had 300 HP.
Subaru is taking over where Saab left off.
I stopped by the Saab dealer the other day...My master mechanic was working on a new 93SS. He literally had the whole inside taken apart. Seems there are 3 computers in those things...and they don't talk to each other. So, when something goes wrong in that area it presents a real problem. The boys at Saab could learn a lot if they were willing to listen.
Bob Lutz....Are you listening????
