ABS light or not? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 6 Jan 2005 13:41:55 In Reply to: Anti Lock acting up, Captain Eddie Bob, Wed, 5 Jan 2005 23:29:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The ABS light comes on if the ABS detects a fault. It does not come on when the ABS is working.
If you have an ABS light when this happens, then a dealer can read the codes. If the ABS light doesn't come on, there's a good chance that no faults will be set, and a trip to the dealer will be fruitless.
Quite often this failure doesn't throw a fault code. The signal gets weaker at slower speeds (that's just how the variable reluctance sensors work) and one sensor may be on the hairy edge, and just miss a few pulses - which looks like a slipping wheel.
The suggestion of reading the sensor resistances is right on. The resistance should be around 1200 ohms, but the best is to measure all of the sensors and see if one is significantly different than the rest, and significantly is 200 or 300 ohms, that would be the one to suspect. They should all be clustered around the same value.
Cleaning the crap out of the shutter wheels is also a good idea. While you're in there, do a visual check for things like cracking in the cable to the sensor.
