In early October, my 1995 Aero starting having problems with stalling or refusing to restart when the engine was warm. I took it to my local Saab dealer who kept it for an afternoon and diagnosed a failed crankshaft position sensor. I picked up the car $320 lighter that evening. On the way home, within 15 minutes of retrieving the car, it stalled and would not start.
I returned the car to the dealer the next day and was told that they weren't completely sure of the solution, but thought the car needed a new fuel pump ($760). I declined due to the expense and instead had the fuel filter replaced as a precaution. Of course, the problems continued, but for the first time time I got a dashboard warning light and was hopeful that would lead to an accurate diagnosis when I took the car back yet again. This time, the dealer told me I needed a new throttle body and two associated valves ($1,300).
By now, however, I was prepared with information that I had researched on this forum. Knowing that one of the valves the dealer had mentioned -- the Safety Runoff Valve (TCS); part# 4015202 -- had been mentioned in several posts and listed on eeuroparts.com as "single most common reason for a TCS check light or limp home mode", I asked if the two valves could be replaced as a first step before investing in the throttle body. The dealer told me this would do me no good and that they only do the three pieces together.
At this point, I was plenty frustrated and decided to take matters into my own hands. I ordered the two valves from eeuroparts for about $125 and installed them myself in no more than 30 minutes. Sure enough, the car has run fine ever since.
I want to do whatever I can to get my original $320 expense back from the dealer since it did nothing to solve my problem and was in no way related to what turned out to be the actual issue. They replaced a part that was perfectly fine.
Would I be better off telling my credit card company to reverse the charge and file a non-performance affidavit with them, or should I take the dealer to small claims court?
Thanks if you reply,
Aeroneous
