In most applications, there is no need for the heavier viscosity oil.
The heavier oil will have more internal resistance, which can give higher temperatures and reduced fuel economy.
Keep in mind that most of the viscosity recommendations from the manufacturers (at least until the past few years) have referred to non-synthetic oil. In extremely high ambient temperatures and heavy loads, using a 50 makes some sense, especially if using non-synthetics.
Synthetics in the xW-30 range offer plenty of engine protection--look at the Mobil test run with 5W-30 for a million miles in a BMW (which recommended heavier viscosity). On tear-down, almost no wear.
If you think it sounds better, and you are happy, fine. Certainly you aren't going to do any harm.
