Things leak - if they don't, they're out of oil. (Old British car joke). Things happen, and a SEVENTEEN year old car that isn't leaking is pretty impressive. So don't ask why it's leaking - enjoy the fact that it wasn't leaking before.

Oil leaks can be tricky - like any fluid, where it comes out isn't always where it starts. And I'm sure it's pretty dirty under there, making it hard to find. The first thing to do is to wipe as much clean as possible, and then see where the oil is. And oil flows down, so keep looking up.

Two places come immediately to mind. The first would be the oil level sender. On the front of the oil pan is the oil level sender, the one that will tell you if your oil level is low when you start up. Look under the front of the car on the oil pan, and look for a couple of wires running to a connector on the front of the pan. If it's leaking there, chances are all that it needs is a new O-ring, not a whole new sender. I've had a few o-rings die. The next time you change the oil, pull the sender out (three bolts) and bring it down to an autoparts store, and they can probably find a new o-ring by matching it for about $1. Or buy a new 0-ring first from a dealer, about $7.

The other location would be the front main seal. This is where the crankshaft comes out of the engine, right behind the main pulley. You might be able to see if you crank the steering wheel all the way to the left, and peek in through the hole in the right fender inner liner where the driveshaft comes out. But it'll be hard to see. Behind the right front wheel there is a rubber patch on the fender inner-liner. If you pull that off, you can see the main pulley, and you might see the oil leaking behind it. The better way is to remove the fender inner liner (two pieces) to look. And you'll end up doing that anyway, because it's almost impossible to get that rubber patch back on with the fender inner-liner in place.
