What does the "H" pipe on old style heater core do?

I haven't had the pleasure yet of opening up things for the heater core yet, so I'm trying to picture the difference between the old style core vs the new, which would account for the $35 difference in cost.
Are the cores themselves basically the same size, except on the older one, the inlet/outlet tubes are shorter? Or is one higher flow, different dimensions, etc?
Does the "H" coupler simply act as two separate connector pieces to extend out the ends so you can slip the heater hose over them while in the blower housing?
I'm wondering why you couldn't simply connect two short lengths of heater hose to it before installation. Different diameter outlets?
