If the heater core is leaking enough to push coolant vapor onto the windshield, you should smell it. The smell of hot coolant is not something you can miss. And condensed coolant wipes off greasy.
I say this because it's possible to be pushing just plain old water vapor onto the windshield. This can be from lots of melted snow in the vents, a partially clogged drain, and other moisture sources in the car. If you develop a fogged windshield but it evaporates away if you go to DEFROST, chances are it's just water, not coolant. If the outside temp is in the mid 30's or higher, and the A/C kicks in and the fog disappears, then it's water.
A lot of folks are complaining of fogging in low 30 / high 20 degree temps, where the A/C can't help to defog. It's a tricky point, because any moisture in the system gets warmed, and then blown directly onto cold glass. I've had heater cores leaking enough to fog the windshield, and they were always accompanied by the distinctive 'baking bread' or 'yeast' smell.
