It may be worth springing for the expensive lifetime coolant, because if it's from actual corrosion rather than some mechanical failure at a joint, you could extend the life cycle of these components.
I got it from eeuroparts even though it's significantly more money than the regular stuff. Naturally, I went and put it in a car that had a preexisting core leak...
Next science project I'm planning is to see if the old style heater core will work in the later style car; as far as I can see, the only difference is that inlet and outlet tubes extend out a bit less on the old one. If the core itself is physically the same and has the same flow characteristics, then it shouldn't be rocket science to bridge the gap. Of course, this is just speculation until I actually try it-
