Blower motor control

I opened up the aquarium on my 93 9k and tested my blower motor by disconnecting the connector and applying voltage with my automotive charger, and found that the blower is working fine. As a stopgap measure for now, I was planning to splice in a tap to the black wire, which is normally supposed to be controlled by the ACC, and wire in a switch to ground.
Has anyone ever looking into the actual blower motor control schematics to determine if it's open collector? I think it should be safe to rig this up, since the controller probably sinks the current from the blower motor to turn it on, but doesn't output 12V.
I just thought I'd see if anyone's got any info to the contrary before I try it.
Also, I was planning to manually set the mixing flap to full hot; from Quasi's write up, that should be with the arm towards the rear (the cable basically pulling it all the way in). If anyone's found that to be incorrect, let me know-
Also, where would be the easiest access to manually set the flaps to defrost mode? Any pointers to the spot (left side, right side, etc would be helpful.
What I'm hoping to do is get the heater going so I'll be able to use the car until I get a chance to further diagnose the problems.
