I have been on the hunt for a '97 Aero for a relatively long time now, searching internet and news ads for about 3 months or so on a near daily basis. I found what I thought was THE car for me in NY: original owner with service records, all original equipment and condition, the color combo of choice, no TCS, and clean as a whistle from photos, etc. I couldn't have wanted a better car, except for...

There are two things I'm having issues over: 1) the dealer where it was serviced said that is had head gasket leak. They retorqued the bolts and told the owner to return in 5k miles (he hasn't been back yet). I don't know if they used new bolts either to retorque the head. The HG is the lesser of two evils in my view 2) The biggest issue I'm trying to get over is the RUST that showed up on some suspension components under the car. Things like the rear axel had what looked to be surface rust toward the wheels, the tie rods had rust and so did the pipe, the area near the oil filter had rust spots, and the area around it looked like it had some corrsion. In AZ and So. CA I don't have this problem. If there's rust (tin worm) I can see, surface or otherwise, there must be rust I CANNOT see and that is my hang up. I plan to keep the car forever and don't want to have to worry about parts rusting out.

Should I pull the trigger and on this car and go for it and replace or somehow clean up what rusty parts I can see and HOPE that no more rust develops? or Should I pass on the car and limit my search to the southwest where the supply of 9k Aeros is as plentiful as rain in AZ (scarce)?

Any suggestions are welcomed!
Thanks!!

PS. I have photos if anyone's interested. I don't know how to paste them here.
