well actually the tinworm does have a preference: untreated body panels. [didn't you know that the germans invented rust for the benefit of early porsches (it helped to lighten them up a bit as pieces fell off) and that they were so pleased w/ the result that they licensed it to the brits and the italians for use throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's...]. luckily saab, and virtually every other car company has been coating the body panels w/ a nearly indestructible rust preventative since the late 80's which is why they have a very long rust-through warranty. as far as the underbody components go, the rust proofing is often limited to a sprayed on primer from a supplier. surface rust on these components, unless horrible, is a non issue as far as predicting body rust. the only caveat that i offer is that non oem replacement body panels are usually not coated w/ the same quality rust preventative as oem. cheap bodywork = rust...HTH
