The book says you should go by how much the tensioner sticks out. You have to remove it and measure. Limit is 11mm but I found that changing the chain alone you will be close to 11mm again in a short while. You would have to change all guides in order to read much less travel on the plunger of the tensioner. If you never ran low on oil level and changed it regularly, timing chain can last quite a bit. They usually start making noise when too long. On the other hand you could change it (or have it changed) by the top of the engine which is relatively cheaper than removing the chain cover. The later allows you to visually chech the balancer chain, sprockets and timing chain sprockets as well as guides.
If I was going to change the timing chain I would also change the balancer chain, all sprockets and guides. It can be done without removing the head...but you are not there yet.
