As the others have said, wheel bearings or suspension bits-
With the wheel unloaded, pull at 12:00 and 6:00, and then 3:00 and 9:00.
With bad wheel bearings, you'll feel a little free movement- usually very little, before you feel the drag of the steering gear with the 3 and 9. I used to do Tech Inspections at autocross, and that was a common check. I always wondered what a bad wheel bearing would feel like until I ran across one, and it was very noticeable. You feel the play at the hub.
If you get non-wheel bearing play at 12 and 6, it's the ball joint. But frankly, without the use of a tool, or unless you're VERY strong, you can't detect a minor ball joint issue. Any issue you can feel by grabbing would result in a car that drives horribly.
Pretty much the same with the 9 and 3. If you've got enough play to feel it, the steering will be pretty bad.
This won't make you feel any better, but I had an inspector fail a car for the same reason. They jacked up the car, and grabbed the tire and 3 and 9, and rocked it. I saw the steering wheel swing back and forth, and the guy said that the wheel had too much play. I offered to hold the steering wheel, and he could try it again, but he was bound and determined to fail the car at that point.
I would do the test myself. Feeling for play is not rocket science - if it feels sloppy, it is sloppy. If it feels tight, it's OK. If you don't feel any problem, I'd try taking it back and trying again - maybe you'll get someone with a clue.
