Yes, the computer takes into account the variables of how fast you are burning gas, etc.
I've had three 9Ks with the mpg counter. My '87's speedo was off by 5-6%, and so was the mpg meter as a result. Otherwise, I've done a lot of comparing, and the meter is very good, though in all cases just a bit less that the actual mpg calculated by the old miles/gal bought.
Then there was the Shell station in Balwin MI that always sold me more gal of gas than the car could hold. I always got lousy mileage there, until I stopped buying gas from those clowns. I tried telling them that they were off by at least 20%, but they never changed. The new gas station down the street never had that problem.
