The mystery of Big Blue Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Blue DI/best price/non-Ebay sources ?, vtsnaab ![]() ![]() |
There is nothing magical about blue DI's. According to John Moss, the thinking goes that Blue DI's are DIs that were returned under warranty and checked out fine. The factory then painted them blue, cut off one corner, and drilled a hole in the plate. They then made them available to Saab shops as a test unit to swap into a car.
Why one hole in the plate? To easily hang on a hook.
Since Saab sold them to shops cheaper than a new unit, many a mechanic put in an order for lots of 'Test DI's'.
Were the blue DI's reconditioned? There is no evidence pro or con. Most likely warranty returns that checked out OK, and didn't look too beat up. And a coat of paint covers a lot.
The Blue DI's work in Red (non T-7) DI engines; for Black DI engines (T7), the recommended test article is green.
I'm always impressed by used units on eBay for $350, when you can buy New ones from eEuroparts for $329.
Which part is the 'lower unit', and what is its part number? I've got an old DI with a leaky coil I'd like to rehab if possible.
And to answer your question about the best source, I'm waiting and watching along side you.
