I had sort of the opposite problem while changing wheel bearings on my son's NG900 last weekend. The snap ring pliers didn't have quite enough reach. They have interchangeable tips, though, and I found a pair with about a 15degree bend that I was able to orient in a way that gave me just the right amount of travel if I compressed the snap ring a little and then shimmed it before trying to lock in.
Hope that made sense. Good luck.
