I have been chasing this vibration for a while (car used to be very smooth) and would love to get it fixed. Seriously, I’ll mail the first person to figure out what is causing my vibration a big, fat $10 bill. Now there’s an incentive :) The car is an ’87 9kT with 284k.
Below is a bullet point description in as much detail as I can provide:
-High frequency drone, it sounds more like having mud tires or being in a jet rather than a bent wheel or what have you
-Can’t feel it much through steering wheel, more through peddles and floor
-Sounds like noise is coming from passenger side, front wheel/axle area
-Rotating tires had no effect at all
-Does not change at all based on steering direction
-Does not change at all based on acceleration, deceleration, braking, being in gear, RPM, etc. Just road speed dependent
-Seem present at all speeds, but only really noticeable at ~50mph+, does not plateau at higher speeds (at least <90mph)
-I very occasionally hear a clicking during moderate, low-speed right hand turns that I suspect is coming from the CV joint, but I can’t replicate with the usual “drive in a circle” test
-My axle nut loosened up a while back causing a (direction dependent) vibration, tightening it to spec cured that problem, but not the one I’m describing here.
-I do not have a history of front-end work on this car, but all boots are good, and passenger side axle has probably been replaced at some point (boot has “USA” printed on it)
-I tried replacing the axle last weekend, but the folks at AutoZone sent the wrong one. On inspection of my old one, the tripod wheels looked smooth and all spun freely
-Attached is a pic of the tripod cup, the only wear that I could see is noted in the picture, but it looks minor to me (?). I did not inspect the outer CV, but reassembled with the old part uncertain that replacing the axle would cure the problem (I would suspect an outer CV issue to be dependent on direction of steering).
I don’t suspect the wheels/tires too much because of A,B, and C
I don’t suspect wheel bearing because of D, but could a loose axle nut have damaged it?
I don’t suspect the axle because of the last couple points, but could the wear in the tripod cup or an on-the-way-out outer CV cause a non-direction dependent vibration?
Thanks very much for any help!
