I think the quote is reasonable, and I'm an advocate of replacing axles. Funnily enough, the quote you were given for the boot replacement MIGHT be a touch high, but probably not. The time involved in undoing all the bits and pieces, getting the CV joint off the axle, cleaning, repacking, and putting all that stuff back together again is probably a an hour and a half, or a bit less, again for estimate purposes. At least the shop has to assume so when quoting you.

Replacing the axle cuts the labor perhaps in half for estimate purposes because there's no removal of the CV joint, repacking, reassembly. It's just *snip*, remove inner boot clamp from driver, pack driver with grease, install new axle, reassemble all the other junk.

Fans of the reboot practice are probably more practiced at the 9000 art than the average shop. The time consuming part of axle disassembly ends up being the fiddly stuff -- what if you can't get that stupid circlip to release? What if you can't get the joint off the splines because there's too much locking compound on the splines? All this takes time away from other paying customers.

If the replacement axle is crapola for some reason, one would assume it would be obvious from early on, and the odds of this happening are probably on a par with the joint being contaminated in the rebuild-it-yourself case. Worse, imagine paying your mechanic to take the axle apart, only to discover the joint is contaminated and you have to replace it anyway?
