I have looked at the Mazda 6- could be a replacement. The new Mazda 3 is supposed to be coming out with either AWD and/or turbo- that would be exciting. Don't think either could compare with the safety of the 9000, however.
The new Subaru Legacy sedan with 250 HP also is very nice, although I felt it was a bit pricy, probably because I still perceive it as a Subaru. The Subaru sedan does not have fold-down rear seats, just a pass-through (when you only have one vehicle, utility is something you need to be concerned with. You can only ask your pickup-truck friends for x number of favors).
This might be considered heresy on the SAAB forum, but the new Chevy Malibu Maxx (or whatever it's called) is pretty close to the 9000. It has five doors (rear hatch), rear seats that fold flat (I think the front passenger seat folds flat, too), front-wheel drive, 200 HP V6 (not a real good engine).
Not that I would buy one.
