I hope my '96 lasts a long time. I have an urge to find a low mileage '97 to '98 to stick in the garage until needed. Talked with a local who has a '93 Aero. It's his 3rd 9K. We talked about just this thing, and had no conclusions. The hatch is a big deal, and hatches just aren't popular these days except on SUVs and a few bottom feeder econoboxes.
You can substitute a number of cars for a 9K, but not replace it, IMO. None of the others have the overall competency of the 9K. It is the combination of road manners, fun-to-drive, capacity, performance, safety, durability, and comfort that are missing as part of the same package. Other cars have maybe three of these.
I guess I'd go for a 9-5 wagon if I couldn't have a 9000, or possibly the new 9-3 sport hatch. The new Subies are nice enough, but I'm not convinced my body would emerge from a 7-8 hour ride without aches the way it can from the 9000.
