Actually there is a reason for locking the tensioner with the special tool or some other method. To remove the belt you push the breaker bar and the 19mm socket towards the windshield (counter-clock wise). This motion compresses and shortens the tensioner shock so the belts becomes loose. However when you try to loosen and remove the pulley bolt, you pull the breaker bar towards the front of the car (clock wise bolt rotation). This motion extends and elongates the tensioner shock. The problem is the tensioner is made from two halves, a cylinder (full of oil) and a piston. By extending it too the tensioner can separate in two. (It happened to me, but it's possible to put it together again). A simple way to prevent over extention without the special tool is to use a couple of heavy duty nylon zip cable tie to hold the top and bottom of the tensioner compressed before removing the belt.
