One of the main adavantages of the DI is the ability to deliver a long multi-peaked spark of 40,000V by a solid state capacitive discharge circuit. This insures complete combustion, better starting, driveability and gas mileage, and better performance at high RPM.
You can achieve the same thing by installing a MSD 6A capacitive discharge ignition control module and replacing the stock coil with a MSD Blaster coil. You'll get a 45,000V spark and an enormous gain in throttle response and acceleration. I don't think you will gain any HP though. I installed a similar unit in a VW a few years back and the improvement was fantastic. It was the best $200 I ever spent on a car. The installation is very easy DIY.
