...in the timing cover; this may just be the source of your noise, you never know. It's a cheap enough fix.
It's not really possible to eyeball a timing chain to see if it's stretched or worn enough to make a difference.
And of course it's really the balance shaft chain, which you can't see, which makes for the most worry, since its crankshaft sprocket is of soft metal and can lead to the balance shaft chain failure, which in turn breaks the timing chain. Only fix is to remove the timing cover and replace the offending sprocket. It's my argument that at you car's mileage it's just not worth the time and expense. Drive it till it drops, then replace it with a later model.
