I had the same problem about 4 years ago. I opened the plastic cover of the controller unit and bypassed the two top connectors, which were badly melted, with thick copper wires soldered directly to the contacts inside the unit. The plastic was so badly melted that I didn't even have to drill holes... I used aftermarket cable connectors to connect the wires to the wiring of the car. If your controller unit is still OK this may save you some $$.

P.S. I also think that it was high resistance in the connectors that caused it to melt. There was nothing wrong with my controller unit, as it is still working fine.
