I had the same problem in my '95 Aero. My fan controller died - fan always on high. I replaced the transistor thingy in the controller, plugged it back in, and 2-3 days later it died again. I read a post on here about loose connections at the controller leading to added resistance and massive heat and death for the cotroller. Basically, every time that connector breaks contact, it arcs, producing heat. Multiply that arcing by 1000/hour (guess) and you get lots of heat. My plug connection was totally fried.
So I went to the junkyard and located a good looking 9000 and took out the controller with it's good plug. I also chopped out the plug at the wiring harness. I then installed the good speed controller and spliced in the good wiring harness connection using wire nuts and crimp connections. Plugged it in and all was fine. That was about 3 years ago. Cost $12. Time - maybe 1-2 hours total. Does not look great, but the wires/wire nuts are buried in the 'aquarium' and not seen. I may try to clean it up this sring when I R&R my squealing cabin fan.
