I took my Sears Biggest flat blade screwdriver, and put it into the timing mark hole on the transmission housing - it's the slot right where the tranny housing meets the engine block, on the top of the tranny. As you turn the engine, various bits come by. Wait for a nice, large, beefy-looking bit, and jam the screwdriver in. Really, it works. It helps to have an assistant hold the screwdriver in place, but in the past I've managed to put the screwdriver in place and have it stay there while I put the torque wrench on the main pulley. I like a big screwdriver because I don't want anything falling into that slot, AND you put a lot of force on it.
The trick is that you can't use just any place on the flywheel - I've never had good luck with grabbing a tooth. But there are plenty of big things bolted/part of the flywheel to grab. Just keep turning the engine.
