The sensor you see is the Crank Position Sensor (CPS). Yes, you need to remove that first. The pump housing is held on with about 8 bolts. There is no face plate, per se - the thing bolted to the face of the timing chain cover IS the oil pump. Inside it are two big gears, one of which is driven by the crankshaft. If you check out eEuroparts, and look at
http://www.eeuroparts.com/(nk3mhxbirm3vxwzub1j330ya)/searchresults.aspx?&carid=1150&cat=1011#
And you can see a poor but useable picture of the oil pump housing. It's just a metal casting bolted to the timing chain cover with the driveshaft coming through. The bolts to remove it are around the outside flange; the larger bolt on the lower right corner, which isn't on the flange, is the oil pressure relief valve.
