86 turbo engine problems Posted by keith [Email] (#1462) [Profile/Gallery] (more from keith) on Mon, 21 Mar 2005 12:43:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
i need some input. my son has my old 86 turbo 5 speed. it's got about 250k on it and is still in pretty decent shape. unfortunately it has been giving him some problems of late. since he's in los angeles and i'm in philadelphia it requires some long distance diagnosis. i'm sure someone on this board is just as likely to have a solution as i would.
it starts and warms up normally, but, after 10 to 15 minutes, whether it is being driven or simply sitting at idle, it begins to misfire and display a noticeable loss of power. it occasionally, but not always, overheats while being driven.
both fuel pumps have been replaced, as has the thermostat, and ignition amplifier. i'm leaning toward a bad distributer or clogged catalytic converter, but, i'm unsure how either unit failing would be temperature dependent (i mean, if the cat is clogged, why would it care if it's cold or hot?) anyway, he's a strugglling artist and on a budget so any and all theories are welcome.
