Before working on it, use some compressed air or similar to clear away any accumulated dirt and debris from the cover, so there'll be nothing to drop into the tank when you lift the pump out.
You may want to prepare in advance by having a plastic bag or cover to place over the opening after removing the pump, just to safeguard against stuff dropping in. You can drop the retaining ring on top to help secure it, in case it's a while before you get the replacement back in, in case you're planning to replace just the insert rather than toss a new assembly on.
There will be fuel dripping from the fuel pump assy after you remove it, so have a container to carry it away from the car.
If the thing's never been out before, you may need to make up a tool to unscrew the splined ring that holds the assembly on. The prior owner on mine apparently took a hammer and chisel to it to remove it; luckily he left a few on there for me to work with, so I was still able to remove it.
