95-98 9000 or 900, which is preferable?

This summer I will probably commute 1.5-2 hours to work 3-4 days a week which will require reliable transportation. I do enjoy my '88 900, but I'm not sure I trust it so far from home (if it breaks down I can always bus in to work right now).
Consequently, I'm looking around at what's available. I note that Andrew's of Princeton has 95-98 900's and 9000's in my price range, and also see Volvo's of similar vintage at similar price. With a new kid on the way, primary interests are safety, fuel economy, and ability to cruise comfortably at 80mph (something my wife's VW Golf lacks).
Can anyone offer comparisons of the NG900 and 9000 series from a repair perspective? I'm comfortable pulling a transmission or replacing a headgasket, but it isn't something I want to consider doing over a weekend. I assume that fuel economy and safety are almost identical. Are parts comparably priced? Is the 900 auto a 4 spd? Does the 900 handle as well?
I'd also welcome impressions of other cars I should have mentioned which are of similar vintage and safety.
