The symptoms you describe (running rich and bucking at extreme boost) are consistent with those of a pressure air leak. I had the same problem on my 1991 Turbo when I had a small tear in the rubber elbow that connects to the throttle body. The AMM thinks gobs of air is being pulled into the system and the fuel computer opens up the injectors. The bucking comes when the mixture is too rich to maintain proper combustion. For me the bucking was almost like a fuel cut out.
An excellent place to look for a leak is the rubber elbow that connects the output of the turbo compressor to the intercooler. The elbow is reenforced rubber, but it sees a lot of heat and oil because of its location. Check the hose clamps on the intercooler and check the other hoses and pipes for integrity. The intercooler can also leak.
Now you might say, how can I have a leak if I still have boost? In my case the car still showed boost because the system compensated for the leak.
