Re: Grease the center metal tube Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Grease the center metal tube, Gene N ![]() ![]() |
After you press out the center metal tube, you will see that the bushing is made up of two polyurethane "tophat" pieces, front and back. I left the polyurethane pieces in the bracket, greased up the tube, pressed it back in with a vice.
I do not know what effect regular petroleum-based grease would have on polyurethane, nor how quickly it will wash out when it gets wet. Note, however, that I have seen poly swaybar bushings with regular grease fittings on them. I used a special silicone-based grease (allegedly containing Teflon) made for exactly this purpose by Energy Suspensions, a US manufacturer of polyurethane bushings - it's sticky stuff. It should be available from shops that sell their products (they do not supply direct to consumers), it's in their catalog. I think that silicone grease is more similar to this than petroleum grease.
I tried to get Energy Suspensions interested in manufacturing and supplying pieces for SAABs (possible side business?), not enough volume, they did not have the proper size pieces already available.
