What does the white exhaust smell like.
Burning oil will look grey/blue...and evaporating coolant will look grey/white. (Yeah, I know it's hard to tell without any other reference.)
Coolant in your exhaust will smell sweet, but oil won't. If its coolant, it's likely a head gasket...and it's possible that it doesn't seem to be loosing coolant, even if it is.
As for the intermittent nature, it can vary, depending on where in the engine's cycle it stops.
I'm sure others will have input as well.
