I assume the sensor you are talking about is the sun sensor, which is in the middle of the dash TOP. It looks like half a dark purple marble.
If you run self-test on the ACC, and you get no faults, you know the sun sensor is working. There is really no other way to test it. Unlike the earlier sensor, this is a pretty complex sensor, that communicates with the ACC via a data bus. It also has a lot of internal self-check. If it thinks it is bad, it sends a fault to the ACC, and the ACC will say that it has a fault after self-test.
Self-test - press the AUTO and Vent (bottom right) buttons at the same time. The display will dim for a second or two, and then the system will start testing itself. You'll know, because you'll see it going through modes. If it pops back to your old setting after half a minute or so, all is well. If there is a fault, it will display the number of faults. It won't display the fault.
