There is no such thing as an "xx" PSI tire. The pressure marked on the sidewall is a maximum pressure, not the recommended inflation pressure. And it's mostly there for liability on the part of the tire manufacturer.
On typical 50 and 55 series tires, there is zero benefit to running high tire pressures on the street. Sure the car *may* handle a little quicker, but unless you are driving around every corner at close to the maximum possible speed there is no value in it. Plus you just wear the tire out faster. When I used to autocross I'd pump the tires up to 40 or 45 psi and it made a huge difference in handling--and lap times--but that was on closed courses where the cars were constantly at the limit of adhesion.
