Your mechanic is looking for work Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 12 Apr 2005 05:37:13 In Reply to: Transmission oil- change or not to change ??, Radecky, Mon, 11 Apr 2005 20:24:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I can think of no valid reason not to change the oil. There is nothing magical about 200K, where suddenly the transmission, due to its age and gained wisdom, can now operate just fine without adequate lubrication or the removal of wear products. And the tranny fluid in there hasn't suddenly become immortal, either.
Maybe, just maybe, IF the tranny were on it's last legs, and there was some concern that fresh oil could disturb some sludge holding things together, it might be reasonable to save the money and effort. But as you say, it's going strong. I assume it's going strong because it has had regular maintenance. So why change now?
The other question would be - so, you're never, ever going to change the fluid again?
I suggest that you ask the mechanic exactly what would go wrong with fresh, clean fluid that didn't go wrong at 175K. And if he says that the fresh fluid may cause leaks, ask him if the old fluid, filled with little metal particles and moisture is better.
