Hello folks,
I have a 1991 SAAB 9000 2.3 L with manual transmission.
I'd like replace the gearbox, but I need some advice about it.
(For sure there must exist more suitable oils than the conventional mineral motor oil, but the wrong oil maybe would bring disaster ?)
The supervisor at the garage where I brought the SAAB for repair recommends I should have the transmission oil replaced. (They would pump the oil out trough the filler cap.) He says the original oil as such is OK, but after so many years it will be mixed with condensation water. He says they have had cases where condensation water have caused gearbox bearing failure.
* Could someone tell if this makes sense, is the gearbox hermetically sealed or is it possible for air to enter and bring condensation ?
He recommends Shell transaxle oil, which he says is a synthetic, he weren't sure if it is according to GL-4 or GL-5 specifications (or maybe both). He say this oil should be OK for more-or-less all mechanical gearboxes of this age (1991). Actually he says that almost any oil should do for this gearbox, and that production of gearboxes with wery specific oil requirements was started a few years later. SAAB started to make a SAAB-brand transmission oil around 1994-95, and he said the SAAB oil would be waste money in my case.
About the syncro, he says that sometimes the synchro will work slightly better with synthethic, sometimes slightly worse than with mineral oil. (I.e. no dramatic change.)
- The above surely sounds right, it is just that I've read somewhere that this gearbox definitely should not have synthetic, as the syncro needs the friction provided by a mineral oil. (But possible this comment was about synthethic MOTOR oil in the gearbox...) And a serious warning about any oil containing sulphur, as it would breake down the bronze syncro rings.
* Anyone knowing if the Shell transaxle oil contains sulphur ?
* Also read somewhere that if changing into synthetic, I must flush the gearbox i.e. first replace the oil with synthethic - then drive a few km - then do the final oil replacement (synthethic).
Grateful for any information on the above topics.
BR,
Ulrik
