shimmy during acceleration

9KT 1991 209mi new to me. smooth ride at cruise, smooth braking, but under more than moderate acceleration, experience increasingly severe shimmy in front end. Driving uphill requiring more throttle also produces noticeable shimmy. Have not done logical checks (tires, bearings, control arm rear bushing, etc) suggested by numerous posts but I will get to it. Yet, because steering is tight, tracks straight, handles great .. I’m thinking drive train. Is it possible that whatever the “differential” in a transaxle is called could be failing and producing this shimmy. As said, at cruise or puttin’ around town, the car is perfect. This shimmy..and that’s the best description..a back and forth wiggle felt in the seat and in the steering wheel..feels like badly out of balance or even out of round tires. At 45mph, the shimmy is about 2 occilations per second, no faster. Tires are new 3k ago and an alignment was done at that time. That's why I tend to rule out steering components. I’m embarrassed to say I just bought this car with this known condition not reasoning that it might be huge. All reply posts greatly appreciated
