...to do a metered flow test on the later-style 9000 airbox and find out if the filter itself is really any restriction.
The whole oiled-cotton filter issue is one of those religious-war things. The most reliable tests I've seen say that they flow more when they're clean, but they've got so much less surface area than an OE-type pleated paper filter that within a few weeks they're no better than the factory filter.
My bet is that the factory paper filter has plenty of area, and that if there's any restriction associated with the factory airbox it probably has to do with the curved snorkel that passes air into the airbox.
I've got an airbox end-shell that I introduced to Mr. Dremel sometime back, routing out three big windows in the sides and removing the OE snorkel, it's got at least 20 sq in of air inlet opening. I ran that for a while, but eventually ditched it because it removed pretty much all muffling of the gasping and wheezing and snorting that goes on in a turbocharged engine's intake tract between wastegate and pop-off valve and so forth - maybe some folks like to listen to this but I don't.
I'm now running a factory airbox end with a snorkel that was introduced to Mr. Heat Gun to stretch the narrow neck at the inlet.
