With the hood open, look for the horizontal plastic cover at the base of the windshield Passenger side, US cars). Pop it off, and you'll see a a plastic box, about 2" front to back, about 12" long (side to side). Carefully remove the cover, and the filter is underneath. It just pulls straight out.
I think the official replacement interval is 30K miles. I do it much sooner. If a car is parked under trees, especially in the fall, the filter can get plugged in a matter of months. If the car has a musty smell, replace the filter. At a minimum, pull it out and look at it. If it looks nice and clean, then put it back. If it's got crumpled leaf particles and signs of mold and mildew, replace it.
I also like to take a shop vac with a small wand and vacuum out the box after I pull the old filter.
