Your procedure was missing three important steps.
1. You need to flush the old mineral oil out of the system. Mineral oil works great with R-12 but doesn't mix at all with R-134a. It tends to end up in a lump in the condensor.
2. You need to replace the receiver/dryer and add new ester-based oil to the compressor. Replace any O-rings on the fittings you have off with new green HBNR O-rings. The black rubber O-rings react to the R-134a.
3. You need to evacuate the system with a vacuum pump to remove the air and moisture. Otherwise, the water vapor will freeze up and block the expansion valve.
Have you done irreparable damage to your compressor? Maybe not. But, you are certainly on that road if you don't back up and do the three steps I've mentioned. There is also the issue of finding the leak that caused the system to stop working to begin with. You will need to find and address that problem or the new refrigerant will just leak out like the old R-12 did.
