Transmission fluid syphoning: a report

Thanks as always to those that posted to my manual trans fluid syphoning query. I did the job last night and just wanted to report on it.
I used a small, cheap hand pump I had sitting around, which had a thin, stiff extender tube. I believe it was from Harbour Freight. I was able to pull out almost exactly 2L worth of fluid in total. Jacking up a corner of the car to tilt it towards the front driver side allowed me to get about 300ml of fluid that I otherwise couldn’t get to.
The fluid looked very dark with some small specs, but otherwise pretty clean. I suspect the specs were brass from the synchros, but with my knowledge of transmissions, that’s just a guess. I was surprised by the color of the fluid, as when I check the level with the little dipstick, I only see clear fluid.
I replaced the fluid with Castrol GTX 10W-40. I’m not sure I notice much difference, maybe slightly smoother shifting, especially into first, but nothing dramatic.
More importantly, the gear whine is a moot point as it wasn’t caused by the trans at all, but rather the tensioner pulley bearing. I had a Borg Warner T-10 box with a whine that sounded just like it, so as usual I jump to the worst conclusion for my trusty 9k, when as usual the problem is pretty minor.
Still, I’m glad to have finally changed the fluid. I’m sure it was needed after 286k.
