I don't expect the spark plugs have failed. But they do live in the engine, and are a fantastic diagnostic tool. They're easy to remove and inspect, and can tell you a lot about what each cylinder is doing, and the engine as a whole. They can tell you if an individual cylinder is running lean, rich, has an oil leak, etc. I pull them to look on perfectly good engines to make sure that nothing is starting to go wrong. If they look good and the gap is right, they go back in. But I know a lot more about the engine.
