I'm going to assume that it's the 2.3l turbo (from the octane numbers and other hints, I assume it's a Canadian or UK vehicle).
Just going to high octane fuel shouldn't change anything other than to address the knock. Even a bad O2 sensor wouldn't cause that much rich running - the O2 sensor has a limited authority on fuel.
A few questions - what do the spark plugs look like? I assume that they're all black and sooty, not just one or two.
Do you have a Check Engine Light?
Are there any hoses off?
How does the car perform? Is it driveable?
Are you burning oil? Oil gives a blush smoke with a distinctive burning oil smell. Running incredibly rich gives black smoke with a different smell. Is the oil level dropping?
Things that come to mind would be that you have one or more sticky injector(s). The bad gas could have gummed up an injector, and it's stuck open. That would make things really rich. The other would be a FPR that is way out of whack, or a blown/leaky diaphram.
If you're burning oil, I'd think the turbo seals may be shot. But if it's just rich, I'd suspect injectors.
