The BPC Solenoid is basically two coils and a metal puck encased in plastic. Coils melt or connections get burned out, the BPC Solenoid lives in a harsh environment sitting on top of the radiator, which doesn't help things. If you have an open coil (no current passing through, infinite resistance), it might occasionally work if the two end pieces on the break touch each other - not very dependable. Because of the plastic construction, there is probably no repair possible. You need to get a replacement, new or used, if you are not going to go the MBC route.

I managed to find a replacement at a local auto recycler after I described what it looked like and where it would be located in the car (they pulled it), paid $25. This came from a fairy new SAAB 9-3, the counter guy called it a "miscelaneous solenoid", had no idea what they sell for new. When I picked it up I measured the coils before I paid, cleaned it out before I installed it. The same part is used for "any 2.3L turbo 90-98 9000, 2.0L turbo NG 900 94-98, and all 9-3 models(incl VIGGEN)" according to eeuroparts' description - I'm not sure if this includes the latest generation of 9-3 or not.

You are correct that this piece is grossly overpriced . Unfortunately, there is only one source: SAAB. I contacted the manufacturer in Germany to try to buy some in quantity (I have a small imports business on the side, saw an opportunity) but was told that they have an exclusive supplier relationship which prohibits them from selling to anyone else.
