I tried that years ago on my '91. On the old DI cassette the coils unplugged, but there were no sources for replacements. I don't think they unplug on the newer ones. From my experience, it's not necessarily the coils that fail, it is the electronics inside that pack that are the problem. Unfortunately they are potted in there an impossible to get at.
