Maybe you have already checked it. But just to make sure. There are two brake light switches. The lower one is for the cruise control. It does nothing to the brake lights. The real brake light switch is located high at the end of the brake pedal. At the brake pedal relaxed position, the brake light switch is depressed, breaking the circuit. When the pedal is depressed, it allows the switch to be extended to complete the circuit so the brake lights are lit.
It is possible the brake light switch is depressed in either case so you have no brake lights. But again, this is probably unlikely if you have not touched or did anything to the brake pedal. In my case I did auto to 5 speed conversion so I changed the pedal assembly and did not adjust the brake light switch.
